Juhudi & Maarifa (Swahili for Effort & Knowledge) is a registered pottery cooperative of nine women and two men. The group has a shared showroom and workshop in Rungemba, a village along the TANZAM highway south of Iringa Town. Juhudi & Maarifa makes and sells a range of earthenware products including cooking pots, stoves, beehives, flowerpots etc. as well as building bricks from clay for the local market. Profits are reinvested into a collective microfinance scheme which is informally set up between the group members. The pottery business supports the group members to sustain their family’s household income as a complement to farming as primary subsistence strategy. fahari yetu assists the group through training in product design, bookkeeping and marketing as well as promoting their products at Iringa Boma.
